Surat : An awareness programme on breast cancer, accompanied by the launch of the Gujarati-language book “A Ray of Hope in Cancer”, was held in the city today. The event brought together doctors, cancer survivors, and social workers, highlighting the urgent need for early detection and reliable information in the fight against one of the most common cancers among women by Dr Kaushal Patel from Elite Hemat Onco Care Centre, Surat.
The highlight of the programme was the formal release of “A Ray of Hope in Cancer”( Cancer ma Asha nu Kiran )authored by Dr. Kaushal Patel, Senior Medical Oncologist at Elite Hemat Onco Care Centre. Written in simple Gujarati, the book is intended as a practical guide for patients, families, and the wider community. It explains different types of cancer, their symptoms, causes, and risk factors, while also providing advice on lifestyle practices, diet, screening, treatment options, and emotional support. It also features real-life stories of survivors, aiming to inspire confidence among readers. Book has been edited very well by Dr Krina Patel.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Patel said, “The word cancer itself often triggers fear. Yet, with timely diagnosis, the right information, and a positive attitude, it is possible to overcome the disease. Through this book, my effort is to give patients and families a resource they can turn to for clarity, confidence, and courage.”
Doctors present at the event stressed that breast cancer is highly treatable if detected early, but due to fear, misinformation, and lack of awareness, many patients still seek medical help only when the disease has progressed. They urged women to carry out regular self-examinations, undergo mammography where appropriate, adopt balanced nutrition, exercise regularly, and avoid tobacco and alcohol. Emotional and familial support, they said, is as important as medical treatment.
The aim of the programme was to spread the message of awareness, screening, and treatment. The event emphasised that by recognising symptoms early and acting without delay, many lives can be saved.
