Hazira-Surat, April 14, 2025: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), a joint venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, continues to contribute to Surat’s economic growth, not just as a major industrial player but as a responsible and responsive partner in fostering a culture of safety.
Situated in Hazira, a major industrial hub and economic engine of Surat, AM/NS India has long recognised the dual responsibility of industrial growth and public safety and has been working closely with Hazira Area Development Authority (HADA) to strengthen safety in the Hazira region. With rapid industrial expansion in the belt, the challenges of emergency response and public safety have grown. AM/NS India has made it a priority to support the city’s emergency response infrastructure, especially through its dedicated Fire Service Team.
During the recent massive fire at Shiv Shakti textile market in Surat city, AM/NS India’s Fire Service Team worked on dousing the fire standing shoulder to shoulder with Surat Fire and Emergency Services (SFES) and fire service teams of prominent industrial players. The fire that took 30 hours of marathon efforts to put off saw fire service teams of all major industrial players of Hazira region coming together.
Over the past 15 months, the Hazira belt has seen 15 major fire related incidents and emergencies. In every case, AM/NS India’s Fire Service Team has responded swiftly, often in coordination with SFES and other emergency services, to help save lives and minimise damage.
AM/NS India’s Fire Service Team has ably responded to various emergencies in the past few months. On February 24 last year, when a dumper collided with a parked vehicle near Hazira village, AM/NS India’s fire crew, in collaboration with SMC and GAIL teams, extricated the driver from the mangled cabin using battery-operated rescue tools, helping prevent further injury.
Similarly, on March 20 this year, after a tanker collided with a trailer near Jaldevi Circle, the team rescued the injured driver and ensured prompt medical attention. In another incident, a fire involving an LPG gas cutting set opposite the Port Gate was quickly neutralised by the team on March 22, preventing a potentially dangerous cylinder burst through expert cooling and containment measures.
Santosh Mundhada, Executive Director – Projects, Hazira & Deputy CTO, AM/NS India, said,
“At AM/NS India, safety is non-negotiable, and applicable to everyone. Surat is our home, and public safety is our duty as well as responsibility. Whether it is rescuing accident victims or preventing fire-related disasters, our Fire Service Team has played a crucial role in saving lives. The National Fire Service Week is an apt occasion to honour the efforts of the emergency team and drive public engagement.”
AM/NS India is commemorating National Fire Service Week (April 14 to April 20) to honor the firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty and recognise the critical work of its Fire Service Team. The National Fire Service Week celebrations which kicked-off at Hazira facility today will witness a host of events such as group competitions, online quiz on fire prevention and protection, fire safety awareness programme for school children, and mass awareness on fire prevention, among others.
These efforts are part of AM/NS India’s broader, ongoing commitment to the safety and well-being of the local communities.
