Supreme Court lawyer Kirti Ahuja highlights gross lapses in Asaram Bapu’s trials

Surat: Supreme Court lawyer and activist of the “Fight for your Right” organisation, Ms Kirti Ahuja, shed light on significant deficiencies in the legal proceedings about the cases against Asaram Bapu.

The conference, organised by the Akhil Gujarat Sant Shree Asaramji Sadhak Sangathan, addressed critical aspects of the trial and emphasised the necessity for justice to prevail.

Ms Ahuja highlighted the various legal deficiencies in the case, including a four-day delay in filing the First Information Report (FIR) and the application of sections related to gang rape and human trafficking. She said that the prosecution concealed various crucial facts from the court, impeding a fair trial. Alleging judicial oversight, she said the trial courts in Jodhpur and Ahmedabad failed to address several lacunae within the case, leading to a potential miscarriage of justice.

“I have meticulously studied the court orders and the judgements. The proceedings in both the Jodhpur and Ahmedabad cases warrant a verdict of acquittal. The trial courts have overlooked critical aspects. If the law is followed properly, Asaram Bapu should be acquitted. I am confident the high court will take note of the lapses and acquit Asaram Bapu,” she said.

She emphasised that Asaram Bapu has not committed the crimes he has been accused of and described the victims’ stories as improbable.

Ms Ahuja appealed to the media to highlight the legal lapses and present accurate facts about the two cases before the people. Addressing concerns regarding Asaram Bapu’s health, Ms Ahuja highlighted medical treatment as a fundamental right. She underscored the need for granting parole or bail to Asaram Bapu on medical grounds.

“Even if the case’s merits are set aside, medical condition is good enough ground for bail for treatment,” she added.
