Surat: In an effort to promote early detection and awareness of breast cancer, Surat Oncology Centre organised a free Breast Cancer Awareness Camp at Universal Hospital on Saturday. The camp underscored the importance of regular screenings in the fight against breast cancer and provided complimentary mammography tests worth Rs. 2,500 to all women.
Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in women and remains a significant health challenge, particularly in developing countries like India. In India, more than 1.5 lakh women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, while around 70,000 breast cancer patients die. This is largely because many patients are diagnosed with breast cancer at advanced stages, leading to reduced survival rates. The camp aimed to address the barriers that prevent women from seeking necessary screenings, which often stem from social, personal and financial concerns.
Dr. Ankit Patel, Medical Oncologist at Surat Oncology Centre, said, “Awareness is crucial in combating breast cancer. Mammography is a preventive tool for screening and detecting breast cancer. However, in our society, a majority of women shy away from mammography due to misconceptions and fear. This camp is a vital step towards spreading awareness about breast cancer and encouraging women to prioritise their health.”
Emphasising the importance of regular screenings, Dr. Priyanka Patel, Medical Oncologist at Surat Oncology Centre, said, “All women above the age of 45 should undergo a mammography screening every year. If there is a family history of breast or ovarian cancer, it is essential to consult an oncologist for tailored screening guidelines. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes.”
Dr. Tanveer Maksud, Medical Oncologist at Surat Oncology Centre, highlighted the necessity of a biopsy before treatment.
“Biopsies are critical for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Despite myths suggesting otherwise, a biopsy does not spread cancer. Rather, it allows us to understand the specific characteristics of the tumour, enabling personalised treatment approaches. With advancements in therapy, we can offer better outcomes for various breast cancer types, including targeted therapies and immunotherapy,” said Dr. Masked.
The camp attracted several participants and facilitated discussions on the various treatments available, including chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy and immunotherapy. The participants were told that for stage IV breast cancer patients, options like targeted therapy and hormone therapy can improve their quality of life without the harsh side effects typically associated with chemotherapy.
