Surat:  Sarathana Nature Park, managed by the Surat Municipal Corporation, spans across a vast area of 81 acres. It is a popular attraction for tourists from North and South Gujarat. Known for conserving and showcasing animals and birds, the park provides a tranquil environment. Annually, more than 10 lakh visitors flock to this park, which currently houses 54 species of animals, including 128 mammals from 24 species, 294 birds from 27 species, and 61 reptiles from 5 species.

Dr. Rajesh Patel, Superintendent of Sarathana Nature Park, stated that over 10 lakh visitors from Surat city, district, and state visit the park each year. The conservation and management of otters are a major highlight of the zoo. Unlike most zoos in India, this zoo has dedicated housing for otters. Currently, 27 otters are kept in captivity here. Due to scientific management, 5-7 cubs are born annually. So far, a total of 17 otters have been transferred from Sarathana Zoo to other zoos.

He further added that the annual revenue of the zoo reflects its popularity. In 2022, 9.41 lakh visitors contributed ₹2.56 crore. In 2023, 8.78 lakh visitors generated ₹2.76 crore, and by 2024, 6.22 lakh visitors have already contributed ₹1.74 crore. The zoo witnesses heavy footfall during Diwali and summer vacations.

Additionally, the zoo operates under the guidelines of the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), which monitors it every two years. The zoo adheres to the suggestions and recommendations of CZA. Among its main attractions are white tigers, lions, bears, and hippopotamuses. Approximately 2 lakh students from schools between Surat and Vapi visit the zoo annually. For the management and safety of visitors, a team of 40 employees is always on duty.
