Surat : As healthcare systems across major international destinations continue to face workforce shortages, communication skills are becoming an increasingly important requirement alongside clinical expertise. Countries including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland continue to prioritise patient-centred communication, multidisciplinary collaboration, and safe healthcare delivery, driving greater demand for healthcare professionals equipped with profession-specific English communication skills.
Reflecting these evolving workforce expectations, OET recently conducted a specialised Teacher Training Workshop in Surat, bringing together educators from across Gujarat for a day of collaborative learning focused on strengthening healthcare English teaching practices and enhancing classroom effectiveness.
Speaking about the initiative, Amit Upadhyay, Regional Director – South Asia, OET, said: “As international healthcare systems continue to place greater emphasis on effective communication and patient-centred care, the role of educators in preparing healthcare professionals becomes increasingly important. Through our specialised teacher training workshops, we aim to equip educators with updated teaching methodologies, practical classroom strategies and a stronger understanding of healthcare English instruction that can enhance learner outcomes. It is encouraging to see educators from across Gujarat participate in this workshop, reflecting the growing commitment to strengthening healthcare communication education across the state.”
The workshop welcomed both new and experienced OET educators, as well as representatives from institutions looking to introduce or strengthen OET preparation within their programmes. Designed to deepen educators’ understanding of the OET Test, the workshop provided participants with comprehensive insights into the format of the four sub-tests Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking while introducing practical classroom resources, updated teaching materials and learner-centred instructional strategies that support effective candidate preparation.
Unlike conventional teacher training programmes that primarily focus on test familiarisation, the workshop emphasised practical classroom application. Participants experienced teaching approaches from the learner’s perspective while exploring instructional methodologies designed to improve engagement, strengthen healthcare-specific communication skills, and support better learner outcomes. Sessions included interactive demonstrations, collaborative activities, guided discussions, practical lesson-building exercises and opportunities to exchange classroom experiences with fellow educators from across the state.
The initiative comes at a time when Gujarat continues to strengthen its position as an important contributor to India’s healthcare education ecosystem. According to the World Health Organization’s Health Labour Market Analysis for Gujarat, the state is home to 35 medical colleges and more than 1.82 lakh registered nurses, reflecting a well-established healthcare education and workforce ecosystem. As healthcare systems across OECD countries continue to rely on internationally trained doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to address workforce shortages, communication skills have become an increasingly important component of workforce readiness alongside clinical competence.
OET continues to strengthen its presence across Gujarat through strategic partnerships, educator engagement programmes, institutional collaborations and business development initiatives. Working closely with language training providers, healthcare education institutions, migration partners and international education organisations, OET supports educator capability while expanding awareness of healthcare-specific English language assessment among professionals preparing for global careers.
A key focus of the workshop was helping educators bridge the gap between language instruction and real-world healthcare communication. Through interactive classroom activities and collaborative teaching exercises, participants explored approaches to strengthening learners’ ability to understand clinical information, interpret workplace communication accurately, engage effectively with patients and colleagues, and develop communication skills essential for international healthcare practice.
The workshop also created opportunities for peer learning and professional exchange among educators representing institutions from across Gujarat. Discussions centred on evolving learner expectations, classroom engagement techniques, effective approaches to teaching each of the four OET sub-tests and the growing importance of communication-focused healthcare English education in supporting India’s internationally mobile healthcare workforce.
Building on the response to its educator engagement initiatives across India, OET will continue expanding specialised professional development opportunities through teacher training workshops, institutional engagement programmes, counsellor awareness sessions and partner collaborations. These initiatives aim to strengthen educator capability, support quality healthcare English instruction and contribute to the growing ecosystem that prepares healthcare professionals for international careers.
