AMNS Shipping and Logistics acquires two Kamsarmax bulk carriers

The two bulk carriers will help the company reduce dependence on foreign-flag vessels and give a boost to the domestic shipping industry

Surat-Hazira, 7 October 2022: AMNS Shipping and Logistics, a wholly-owned subsidiary and the shipping arm of ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), the joint venture of ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, has acquired two Kamsarmax bulk carriers of 81,000 Deadweight tonnage (DWT) each.

The names of the two vessels – AMNSI Maximus and AMNSI Stallion – signify AM/NS India’s steel brand names for premium quality rolled steel plates and hot-rolled steel.

The two vessels were registered at the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) in Mumbai recently in the presence of MMD, Mumbai’s Principal Officer Captain SI Abul Kalam Azad and Nautical Surveyor cum DDG (Tech) Captain Anish Joseph.

Also present on the occasion were Ashutosh Mathur, Head of Chartering at AM/NS India, Head of Treasury & Banking at AM/NS India M. Balajee, and AngloEastern Ship Management MD Manish Saxena.

“Until now, AM/NS India had been mostly dependent on chartering foreign-flag vessels for the movement of 15 MMTPA of raw materials between the east and west coasts of India. The acquisition of these two vessels is an important step to reduce the dependence on foreign-flag vessels and will give a boost to the domestic shipping industry,” commented Mr. Hrishikesh Kamat, Chief Procurement Officer, AM/NS India.

AM/NS India is a major steel producer with 9 MMTPA installed capacity at Hazira near Surat. The company plans to expand its vessel fleet for better operational control of cargo movement.

AMNS Shipping and Logistics is a wholly-owned subsidiary of AM/NS India and owns floating assets and caters to steel plant requirements as well as market cargoes. The dedicated entity for meeting the shipping requirements of the steel plant helps in giving the company a cost advantage in the transportation of raw materials, especially when freight rates are high.

Moreover, shipping is the most environment-friendly mode of transport. AMNS Shipping and Logistics is committed to decarbonising its shipping supply chain and plans to add the latest vessels to its fleet to reduce carbon emissions.
